Welcome to Taormina, the ultimate holiday paradise!

taormina1

As soon as you arrive in Taormina, you will feel the magical, mythical atmosphere spread all around which has enchanted visitors from all over the world. Settled on a hill of the Monte Tauro, Taormina dominates two grand, sweeping bays below and on the southern side, the top of Mount Etna, the European highest active volcano. Taormina really seems to be born as a tourist resort since past times, when ancient people like the Sicels, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Saracens, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards chose it as their residential site thank to its favourable position, mild climate and magic atmosphere. Nowadays visitors can still find fine examples of Taormina’s golden times: the splendid Greek Theatre, the Roman “Naumachiae”, the 10th century Palazzo Corvaja, the 13th century Cathedral of Saint Nicolò, the 16th century Palace of the Dukes of Saint Stefano, the public gardens, the “Badia Vecchia” (Ancient Abbey) and many others.

In 1787 J.W. Goethe discovered the beauties of Sicily and, in particular, of Taormina. He wrote the world known novel “Italian Journey”, in which he describes the beauties of this land and its people and pronounced Taormina a “patch of paradise”. Since then many important celebrities visited Taormina, electing it as their “escapade place” from chaotic city life. In more recent times movie, theatre and music celebrities have spent pleasant and memorable holidays in the Mediterranean pearl.

Since the opening of the first hotel in 1874, Taormina has become one of the world top tourist destinations where visitors can experience a perfect combination of old times charming atmosphere, preservation of history and culture, an elegant and lively way of life to be enjoyed in relaxing walks through the old town pedestrian areas. The tourist has a lot to do and see: top level art performances at the Greek theatre, several painting exhibitions held in local palazzi and churces, fine elegant shopping along the famous “Corso Umberto”, local art museums, naturalistic walks in the surrounding countryside, golf at the nearby 18-holes green, fantastic beaches at easy reach, where the mild Mediterranean climate allows to practise all water sports as swimming, scuba diving, sailing, windsurfing, or just sunbathing for nearly eight months a year and even more.

For those looking for the world known Sicilian cuisine, the town offers a wide choice of restaurants, trattorias and pizzerias, pastry-shops, bars, cafes, pubs and for any taste and budget.

Outside the town

Coves

Down below, the isle of Isola Bella is connected by a thin strip of sand to the mainland: no more than a beach towel across at its narrowest point. The coves below Taormina, north of the resort of Giardini-Naxos, are connected to the town by cable car, and in summer most visitors spend the day down there, returning for the evening passeggiata through the town centre.

The Alcantara Valley

Spring or late autumn is also a good time to explore the Alcántara valley, which curls inland from Taormina around the northern edge of Mount Etna: a place of handsome, crumbling hill villages such as Castiglione di Sicilia, low gorges bordered by shiny gunmetal-grey rocks and invitations to buy local products such as Etna honey and a fiery, sulphuric red wine.

The Teatro Greco

This is signposted from just about everywhere and can be found at the end of Via Teatro Greco. The theatre is carved out of the hillside and the magnificent views give a complete panorama of southern Calabria, the Sicilian coastline and snow-capped Etna. Although it was founded by Greeks in the third century BC, it was rebuilt at the end of the first century AD, a period when Taormina enjoyed great prosperity under Imperial Roman rule and the reconstruction completely changed the theatre’s character. Open daily from 9am to one hour before sunset.

Mount Etna

The view from up on Mount Etna is startling. Around you is a heaving sea, a vast congealed flow of dull brown-black fragments. The lava swallows light and sound, so you have to strain to hear your guide. Visitors are now ferried in huge four-wheel-drive minibuses up to a point just below the Torre del Filosofo – supposedly built by the philosopher Empedocles just before he leapt into the crater to convince his followers that he was a god.

Film Festival

Taormina’s annual film festival takes place in June, when films are shown on a giant screen and stars turn up to receive their awards.

Giardini-Naxos

Giardini-Naxos was an obvious stop for ships sailing between Greece and southern Italy, and there was a settlement here by 734 BC, named Naxos after the Greek island from which the colonists came. The resort constitutes a wide, curving bay, south of Taormina, and is a particularly good spot for swimming. The town of Giardini which backs the beach, is excellent for those after cheaper accommodationa and food that that found in Taormina. The beach is one of the most popular in Sicily, and there are also numerous water-sports facilities here.
